Movement/stepping while in posture
Once you’ve learned the postures you’ll need to be able to move them around smoothly. Movement in Italian renaissance swordplay is about controlling the distance between you and your opponent and changing the angles, and doing all that while remaining in a position of relative safety.
How to move when you’re fencing only matters because you’re not only changing angles and the distance from your opponent, but you’re doing so while remaining safe and working to control the dynamics between you and the opponent. If all that mattered was getting closer or farther away from the adversary, then you could just walk as you would normally. But in a martial art, you need to be able to move while still controlling and defining the space in-between you and them.
